Middlesex 7s Festival 2017

More than 60 teams competed in the 2017 festival, in men’s, women’s and student competitions at every level of the game from serious to social, with competitions played in pools, leading to final knock-out rounds, with cash prizes awarded to the winners of every competition. The Merit & Social 7s proved one of the most popular competitions with a record number of open and club teams participating. The format was opened up still further with the addition of an O2 mixed touch rugby competition.

The festival truly embraces the flavour of modern sevens rugby, welcoming open teams as well as its core club teams. An open competition enables teams such as those competing at Summer Social, Rugby Rocks or Bournemouth 7s to participate in the legendary Middlesex 7s, with the winners qualifying for the RFU National 24/Sevens series.

Millfield Old Boys Academy were back-to-back winners of the Club 7s Cup, sponsored by  iLite from Phoenix Sporting Goods, beating Old Haberdashers to claim the Derek Mann Cup which was presented by Middlesex Rugby president Tom Brownsell. Accenture Ladies won the Flynn Rose Bowl in the Women’s Open Competition.

Lomaiviti Rugby 7s won the open competition, the Open 7s, which is a qualifying event for the RFU 24/Sevens National Series. Accenture Ladies won the women’s open competition to claim the Flynn Rose Bowl. Both teams progressed to the regional finals of the 24/Sevens at Hazelwood in July.

The winning teams were awarded cash prizes, as well as slabs of beer to help them celebrate their victories.

Club Sevens History

Since its inception in 1999, the Club Sevens has developed to encompass women’s and students’ sevens along with a Vase competition for the more junior clubs.

First played over two weekends with the finals at Harlequins’ Stoop Memorial ground, Club Sevens relocated to Richmond Athletic Ground in 2006 so that all 7s competitions could be run simultaneously across the RAA’s seven pitches on the same day.

With teams competing from throughout Middlesex and beyond, the event retains the traditional end-of-season slot, and the festival atmosphere to go with it, and the organising committee really knew the event had made it into the rugby calendar when, just like the senior competition, in 2008 they had their very own streaker.
